Ibiza After Hours Clubs Banned
January 29th, 2008From next season “after-hours” dance clubs on the island where the party never stops will be banned.
The Consell Insular d’Evissa, or regional council, said these clubs, which operate between 6am and 10am, after normal club hours, were causing a disturbance for residents and less nocturnal holidaymakers.
Ibiza’s local council, the Consell Insular d’Evissa, this week confirmed they’ll be enforcing a club curfew between 6am and 10am for the coming season, with Space, DC10 and Bora Bora all being forced to close during those hours. Britain’s Independent said afternoon clubbing could also be banned around Ibiza Town (til 6pm), though Space owner Pepe Rosello said they’ll be switching morning sessions to afternoons.
Pacha chief Danny Whittle suggested the changes could even prove positive. “It’s not actually a ban, its more like Ibiza coming into line with mainland Spain. I don’t think it will effect Ibiza at all,” he predicted. “To be honest for me the best part of daytime clubbing is the afternoon, when people have had food and showered and look good. The best part of Space for me was always meeting everyone there around 2pm and plotting up around a table on the terrace for an afternoon and evening of madness. I’ve never been a big fan of carry-ons in the morning, they always seemed to get me into trouble,” he laughed.
Ibizan authorities have cracked down on after-hours parties on the island. Clubs like DC10 will be forced to close their doors between 6am–10am after new legislation ruled that the after party culture in Ibiza was proving detrimental to residents and tourists alike.
The Consell Insular d’Evissa — a regional council on the island — consider the late clubbing to be a disturbance, and the new ban will soon be enforced in the Sant Josep area, home to clubs such as Space, Bora Bora and DC10. The new ruling appears to follow the lead of the authorities in San Antonio, where after parties have been illegal for some time. It’s the latest example of the Ibizan government’s uneasy relationship with the island’s reputation as the world’s clubbing Mecca.

The clampdown was prompted by continued problems with drug-taking among clubbers and the deaths of three people in shoot-outs between rival gangs in the past two years.
For many it marks the end of an era for the island which invented chill-out music and which was famous for its hedonistic, anything-goes attitude.
Hundreds of thousands of young people flock to the island every year and it has also become the playground of celebrities from Kate Moss to James Blunt.
But now the famously laid-back locals, worried that the clubs and drugs are getting out of hand, have had enough. Last summer’s season saw 720 arrests for drugs-related offences.
